Sold Secure had used a three-tier rating system to grade the security of different bicycle locks, until 2020, when the Sold Secure Diamond bike lock rating was introduced.
At the time of Sold Secure Diamond’s introduction, the Gold category had become overcrowded, and cyclists needed help understanding which of the many Gold-rated locks offered more security.
Additionally, as the e-bike market has rapidly expanded over recent years, the average price of a bike on our streets has risen, and the tools thieves are now using to steal bikes have advanced.
So, Sold Secure introduced the Diamond rating to clarify confusion among cyclists and highlight which locks are suitable for the highest-value bikes and e-bikes.

What Is Sold Secure?
Sold Secure is a non-profit company owned and operated by the Master Locksmith Association in Rugby, England.
Originally a police initiative, Sold Secure evaluates the security offered by various security products using real-world testing.
Sold Secure continues to work closely with the police, home office, and insurers to ensure that their testing reflects the methods of attack thieves use to compromise security products.
After submitting security products to their rigorous in-house testing procedure, Sold Secure analyses the results and grades the tested product.
Sold Secure ratings are then displayed upon security products when sold, providing consumers with a valuable understanding of the security levels they can expect from different products.
What Does Sold Secure Diamond Mean?
The Sold Secure Pedal Cycle Diamond category comprises most of the best bike locks on the market.
Several of these top-rated locks offer resistance to angle grinder attacks, a feature cyclists have longed for for decades.
It’s important to understand that two Sold Secure Diamond ratings apply to bike locks:
- Sold Secure Pedal Cycle Diamond
- Sold Secure Powered Cycle Diamond
Lock’s awarded the Pedal Cycle Diamond rating are intended for use with conventional bicycles and e-bikes and are suitable for use in high-risk areas.
Locks awarded the Sold Secure Powered-Cycle Diamond rating are designed for use with the highest-value bicycles, e-bikes and motorcycles and offer resistance to power tools such as angle grinders and drills.
To gain a clearer understanding of these ratings, I spoke with Guy McCafferey, the Sold Secure Lab manager, who gave me the inside scoop.
“Sold Secure Pedal Cycle Diamond Products offer attack resistance against a higher tool list (aimed at preventing the highest motivated attacks)”.
“Many cyclists will have an e-bike (classed as powered) and will lock in very high-risk areas which will likely involve thieves with angle grinders. These [Angle Grinders] are only introduced [to testing] at the Powered Cycle Diamond rating.”
Guy’s explanation makes clear that cyclists riding more valuable bikes and e-bikes should opt for a lock with the Sold Secure Powered-Cycle Diamond rating since their bikes are likely to be targeted by thieves wielding angle grinders.
Pedal Cycle vs Powered Cycle Ratings
Before the introduction of Sold Secure’s Pedal and Powered Cycle Categories, these categories were labelled “Bicycle” and “Motorcycle”.
While e-bikes are still bicycles, they’re much more expensive on average and more likely to be targeted by thieves.
To draw a more precise line in the sand, Sold Secure merged the top end of the Bicycle Category with the Motorcycle category and labelled the resulting category as “Powered-Cycle”.
For example, the Powered-Cycle category applies to the following vehicles (non-exhaustive):
- E-bikes
- Mopeds
- Motorbikes
- Other Motorized Bikes
The remaining Bicycle category was also renamed “Pedal Cycle” and applies to pedal-powered conventional bicycles, apart from the Diamond rating, which overlaps into Powered-Cycle Gold and is aimed at high-value bikes and e-bikes.
The Pedal-Cycle category still contains four security gradings: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond.
And the Powered-Cycle category has just the two, Gold and Diamond.
Unknown to many, the test required to earn the Pedal-Cycle Diamond and Powered-Cycle Gold rating is the same, which explains why we see many Pedal-Cycle Diamond Locks in the Powered-Cycle Gold category.
The Powered-Cycle Diamond rating includes only the most secure locks on the market.
At this level, an angle grinder is introduced to testing, so only super-beefy locks and those that use grinder-resistant technology reside in this category.

What Do Sold Secure Ratings Mean?
Bronze-rated products offer defence against opportunist thieves and are suitable for very short stops or low-risk areas.
We don’t recommend these for use as a primary bike lock.
Silver-rated bike locks offer a compromise between security and cost and are suitable for use in medium-risk areas.
Gold-rated products offer the second highest level of security and are suitable for use with mid-to-high-value bicycles.
Diamond-rated products provide the highest level of security in the bicycle category, aimed at high-value bicycles and e-bikes.
Powered-Cycle Gold-Rated products are suitable for high-risk areas and designed for use with high-value powered bikes (including motorcycles).
Remember, locks in this category undergo the same testing as those in the Pedal-Cycle Diamond category.
Powered-Cycle Diamond-rated products offer the highest levels of security and are designed for use with the most valuable vehicles.
Angle grinder tests are conducted on all locks attempting to gain this rating.
Locks in this category are expensive.
Sold Secure FAQs
Just because two products bear the same Sold Secure rating doesn’t mean they offer your bike the same level of security!
Despite being put through the same testing procedure, locks have many variations in their security features, meaning they’ll perform differently during testing.
For example, Lock A may only just meet the requirements for the Pedal-Cycle Gold rating, whereas Lock B may easily surpass the requirements but not be secure enough to earn the Pedal-Cycle Diamond rating.
Two locks are in the same security category, but two different levels of security!

Diamond is the highest rating awarded to locks in Sold Secure’s Pedal Cycle category.
The order of the ratings within this category (from least to most secure) is as follows:
- Sold Secure Pedal-Cycle Bronze
- Sold Secure Pedal-Cycle Silver
- Sold Secure Pedal-Cycle Gold
- Sold Secure Pedal-Cycle Diamond
Sold Secure Pedal-Cycle Diamond-rated locks are the most secure in the Pedal-Cycle category and are designed to lock expensive bikes and e-bikes in high-risk areas.
The Sold Secure Pedal-Cycle Diamond category uses the same testing procedure as the Powered-Cycle Gold category, so locks displaying either of these ratings are suitable for e-bikes and high-value conventional bicycles.
